Arvaikheer

Arvaikheer is the capital of Ovorkhangai Province in central Mongolia, in the eastern foothills of the Khangai Mountains at an elevation of 1,817 meters, and is by far the largest town in its province. The 2017 census recorded 29,420 residents. It functions as a hub for traditional crafts, goat herding and equestrian sports, hosting a large regional horse festival every year, and shares with Tsetserleg one of Mongolia's mildest microclimates, with only a 30 degree Celsius gap between its coldest and warmest months. Until 1990 a Soviet Army division was headquartered there; after the end of communism the town rebuilt public structures including its Sports' Palace, and a monastery destroyed in the 1937 Stalinist purges reopened in 1991.
