Baruun-Urt

Baruun-Urt is the capital of Sukhbaatar Province in eastern Mongolia, its name meaning west-long in Mongolian. It sits at an elevation of 981 meters as an enclave within the surrounding Sukhbaatar sum, covering 59 square kilometers. The town's population grew from 6,000 in 1959 to a peak of 17,289 in 1994, and stood at 18,190 in 2017. The Tomortiin Ovoo zinc mine lies about 13 kilometers to the north, and the town has a cold semi-arid climate with long, very dry winters and short, warm summers.
