Choir

Choir is the capital of Govisumber Province in east-central Mongolia, officially known as Sumber sum and designated a free enterprise zone. It sits in the Choir Depression at an elevation of 1,279 meters, about 250 kilometers southeast of Ulaanbaatar on the Trans-Mongolian Railway. During the Soviet period the town served as a military base with anti-aircraft missile units that left in 1989; in 1992 the former military cantonment passed to the jurisdiction of Govisumber Province under Mongolia's new constitution. The population grew from 4,500 in 1979 to 7,588 in 2002 and reached 10,434 by 2017. A statue near the railway station commemorates Jugderdemidiin Gurragchaa, Mongolia's first cosmonaut.
