Darkhan

Darkhan is the capital of Darkhan-Uul Province in northern Mongolia and is nicknamed the country's second capital. It was founded on 17 October 1961 and built with extensive economic assistance from Comecon, the Soviet-led economic bloc, as an industrial manufacturing hub for northern Mongolia; Polish specialists built its woodworking and brick facilities and Hungarian engineers built a meat-processing plant that opened in 1974. As of 2022 the city had 87,696 residents, making it Mongolia's third most populous city, and it remains predominantly industrial, housing about 82 percent of the province's population. It sits at an elevation of 665 meters surrounded by mountains and hills.
