Khovd

Khovd is the capital of Khovd Province in western Mongolia and the administrative seat of Jargalant District, sited at the foot of the Altai Mountains and split by the Buyant River, with Khar-Us Lake about 25 kilometers to the east. It was first established by Galdan Boshugtu Khan of the Dzungar Khanate in 1685, and after the Qing dynasty destroyed the Dzungar Khanate the settlement was later moved onto the bank of the Buyant River. In 1912 Mongolian forces captured the city, destroyed its Manchu-Chinese garrisons and ended Qing rule there. Its population reached 29,800 in 2017, up from 26,023 in 2000, and it has a cold desert climate with long arid winters and brief summers.
