Tsetserleg

Tsetserleg is the capital of Arkhangai Province in west-central Mongolia, sited on the northeastern slopes of the Khangai Mountains about 600 kilometers southwest of Ulaanbaatar. Its name means garden in Mongolian. The town grew up around Zayiin Gegeen Monastery, built in the early 1680s, which made it an important Buddhist center until the monastery's institutions were damaged during Communist-era suppression in 1932. As of 2017 the city had around 21,620 residents, up from 16,553 in 2000, and its metropolitan area of 536 square kilometers sits at an elevation of 1,691 meters with a distinctive microclimate of cooler summers and warmer winters than most of Mongolia.
