Ulaangom

Ulaangom is the capital of Uvs Province in far northwestern Mongolia, on the slopes of the Kharkhiraa mountains about 26 kilometers southwest of Uvs Lake and some 120 kilometers south of the Russian border. The settlement is believed to have been founded in 1686, and Ulaangom Monastery, originally called Dechinravjaa Monastery, was established there in 1871. Its district population stood at 39,045 in 2024, and the urban area covers about 46 square kilometers at an elevation of 939 meters. Ulaangom has an extremely continental, cold semi-arid climate and is considered one of the coldest places in Mongolia.
