Birgunj

Birgunj is a metropolitan city in Nepal's Parsa District, in Madhesh Province, about 135 kilometers south of Kathmandu and adjacent to the Indian town of Raxaul on the border with Bihar. Founded in 1897 by Rana prime minister Bir Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, who gave the settlement his name, it was one of the first three municipalities established in Nepal and was declared a metropolitan city in 2017. Known as the gateway of Nepal and its commercial capital, Birgunj handles the large majority of Nepal's overland trade with India and, with a 2021 population of 268,273, is the country's fifth largest city.
