Mohenjo-daro

Southern Asia

Mohenjo-daro is an archaeological site in the Larkana District of Sindh province, Pakistan, on the west bank of the lower Indus River about 28 kilometers from the town of Larkana. Built around 2500 BC, the settlement occupied roughly 250 hectares on a raised Pleistocene-era ridge within the Indus floodplain, a position that kept its mudbrick platforms above seasonal river flooding for centuries. Its street grid ran in straight lines close to the cardinal directions, with rectilinear brick buildings laid out in blocks between wider thoroughfares, a planned arrangement typical of major Indus Valley Civilisation cities. The site lies near 27.33 degrees north, 68.14 degrees east, in the wide alluvial lowland the Indus has built up over millennia, and repeated shifts in the river's channel have both buried and eroded sections of the ancient city.
