Legazpi is a component city and the capital of Albay province in the Bicol Region of the Philippines, on the western shore of Albay Gulf about 560 kilometers southeast of Manila. Originally a coastal village called Sawangan, it was renamed in 1856 for the conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and had a 2024 census population of 210,616. Lying south of the active Mayon Volcano, the city serves as the administrative, economic and transport hub of the Bicol Region and the base for regional volcano monitoring.
