Tacloban is a highly urbanized city in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, geographically part of and the capital of Leyte province. Established as a barrio in 1770 and chartered as a city in 1952, it had a 2024 census population of 259,353 across 201.72 square kilometers, the most populous city in Eastern Visayas. Tacloban served as the temporary capital of the Philippines under the Commonwealth government from October 1944 to February 1945, and on November 8, 2013 the region was devastated by Typhoon Haiyan, whose official nationwide death toll reached 6,201.
