Omsk is the administrative center and largest city of Omsk Oblast in southwestern Siberia, Russia, with a population of over one million, making it the third largest city in Siberia after Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk. Founded as a Russian fortress at the confluence of the Irtysh and Om rivers, Omsk grew into a major industrial and oil-refining center and is known as the place where the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky was imprisoned in the mid-nineteenth century.
