Najran

Najran is a city in southwestern Saudi Arabia and the capital of Najran Province, with a population of 381,431 in 2022 that makes it one of the fastest growing urban centers in the kingdom. It sits at an elevation of 1,293 meters in a fertile oasis that historically served as a major trading hub along caravan routes linking Yemen, the Hejaz and Mesopotamia. Najran was an important center of pre-Islamic Arabian Christianity and is remembered for the massacre of its Christian community in 523 CE by the Jewish king Dhu Nuwas. Today the population is predominantly Ismaili Shia Muslim with a Sunni minority, and the surrounding region became part of Saudi Arabia after the 1934 Saudi-Yemeni war, a claim contested by Yemen until 1994.
