Siberia is the vast region of North Asia running from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, covering roughly 13.1 million square kilometres, about three-quarters of Russia's territory, while holding only about a quarter of its population. The West Siberian Plain is a low, flat expanse of Cenozoic alluvium; the Central Siberian Plateau to its east is an ancient craton rich in gold, diamonds and metal ores. Its severe continental climate produces short warm summers and long, extremely cold winters, and towns such as Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk rank among the coldest permanently inhabited places on Earth.
