Sistan, formerly known as Sakastan and Sijistan, is a historical region in southeastern Iran that extends across the border into southwestern Afghanistan. It largely corresponds to the ancient Achaemenid region of Drangiana, extending south of the Helmand River toward the city of Alexandria in Arachosia. The region is largely desert and is bisected by the Helmand River, which empties into Hamun Lake near Zabol on the Iran-Afghanistan border.
