Apamea, Syria

Apamea is an ancient Hellenistic and Roman city on the right bank of the Orontes River in northwestern Syria. Founded as a Macedonian military settlement under the name Pella following the Wars of the Diadochi, it was refounded as a fortified city around 300 BC by Seleucus I Nicator, who renamed it after his wife Apama. It served as the capital of Apamene under the Seleucids and later as capital of the Roman province of Syria Secunda, a status it kept into the Crusader period.
