Baniyas is a Mediterranean coastal city in Tartus Governorate in western Syria, located 55 kilometers south of Latakia and 35 kilometers north of Tartus. Its ancient name was Balaneae, also rendered Balanaea or Balaneais, and it was known in antiquity as Leucas or Leucas-Claudia.
