Daraa

Daraa is a city in southwestern Syria, 13 kilometers north of the border with Jordan and the capital of Daraa Governorate in the Hauran region. Located 90 kilometers south of Damascus on the Damascus-Amman highway, it serves as a way station for travelers, and the 2004 census recorded a population of 97,969, predominantly Sunni Muslim. Daraa became known as the cradle of the Syrian revolution after the 2011 arrest of teenagers for anti-government graffiti sparked protests that grew into the wider Syrian uprising.
