Qamishli

Qamishli is a city in the Al-Hasakah Governorate of northeastern Syria, on the border with Turkey, adjoining the Turkish city of Nusaybin. It is the second largest city in the governorate after Al-Hasakah, with a population of 184,231 recorded in the 2004 census. The city was founded in the 1920s by Assyrians fleeing persecution, first known as Bet-Zalin before being renamed Qamishli in 1926, and it has since been a significant center for both Assyrian and Kurdish communities. Qamishli served as the de facto capital of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria until that role moved to Ayn Issa.
