Tainan

Tainan is a special municipality in southern Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait on its western coast, and is the oldest settlement on the island. For 263 years it served as Taiwan administrative capital under Dutch colonial rule, the Kingdom of Tungning, and the Qing dynasty, a role it held until 1887. Its long history of transformation and renewal has earned it the nickname the Phoenix City. In 2020 the Globalization and World Cities Research Network classified Tainan at a Sufficiency level, though the city was not included in the network 2022 or 2024 assessments.
