Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is the northernmost major city in Thailand and the capital of Chiang Rai Province, with a population of about 70,000. It was founded by King Mangrai in 1262 and served as the capital of the Mangrai dynasty, later coming under Burmese control for several centuries before becoming a vassal of Siam in 1786 and a full Thai province in 1933. Chiang Rai has been recognized by UNESCO as a Design City within its Creative Cities Network, a modern distinction alongside its long history.
