Ağrı

Ağrı is a city in eastern Turkey near the Iranian border, seat of Ağrı Province and Ağrı District, at an elevation of 1,640 meters, and takes its current name from nearby Mount Ararat. Its population was 120,390 in 2021 and 148,765 in 2022. The city was formerly known as Karaköse and, until 1946, officially as Karakilise; it and its surrounding province are predominantly inhabited by Kurds, with Kurmanji the predominant spoken language. The nearby Ishak Pasha Palace is a significant historical building, and the region's Armenian population suffered massacre during the First World War, described in a March 1915 New York Times report of the Alashkert valley being covered with the bodies of men, women and children.
