Astyra (Aeolis)

Astyra, also known as Astyrum or Astyron, and possibly identical with Andeira, was a small town of ancient Aeolis and Mysia in the plain of Thebe between Antandrus and Adramyttium. It held a temple of Artemis, who took the epithet Astyrene from the town, and Pausanias describes a hot spring of black water there, though he places it in the territory of Atarneus, leaving some uncertainty over whether this was the same site or a separate place of the same name. A nearby lake called Sapra connected to the sea, and Pliny's sources described Astyra, which he calls Astyre, as already deserted in his time; coins attributed to the town survive.
