Balikesir is a city in the Marmara region of Turkey and the seat of Balikesir Province, which is organized as a metropolitan municipality. As of 2022 the province had a population of 1,257,590, of which 314,958 lived in the city proper across its urban districts of Altieylul and Karesi. Between 1341 and 1922 the city was the capital of the Beylik of Karasi.
