Çanakkale

Çanakkale is a city and seaport in Turkey on the southern shore of the Dardanelles at their narrowest point, seat of both Çanakkale Province and Çanakkale District in the Marmara region. Its population was 143,622 in 2021. The city was built as the fortress of Kale-i Sultaniye by Mehmed II in 1462 and later became known for its ceramics industry, giving rise to its present name, meaning Pottery Castle; it is the nearest major urban center to the ancient ruins of Troy and was the focal point of the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War. A wooden horse prop from the 2004 film Troy now stands on the city's waterfront.
