Cerasus (near Trapezus)

Cerasus was an ancient town on the Black Sea coast of Pontus, a colony of Sinope situated a short distance west of Trapezus, modern Trabzon, in what is now Turkey. It is known chiefly from Xenophon's Anabasis, which records the Greek mercenary force known as the Ten Thousand reaching the town on the third day of their retreat from Trapezus. The town's name and population were later transferred to Pharnacia in the Hellenistic period.
