Chalcedon was an ancient maritime town of Bithynia in Asia Minor, founded by Greek colonists from Megara around 685 BC on the Asian shore of the Bosporus opposite the future site of Byzantium. Despite its inferior position across the strait, it grew into a significant trading port and Christian center, hosting the Fourth Ecumenical Council in 451 AD that defined church doctrine on the nature of Christ. Its site is now the Kadikoy district of Istanbul, Turkey.
