Gergis (Troad)

Asia

Gergis, also known as Gergithus, Gergitha, or Gergithes, and later as Kerge, was a town in the ancient Troad, north of the Scamander River, said by Herodotus to have been inhabited by descendants of the mythical Teucrians. Herodotus records that the Persian army of Xerxes I passed through Gergis on its way to Abydos in 480 BCE, and by the time of Xenophon it was a fortified place with an acropolis, serving as one of the chief towns of the Dardanian princess Mania. King Attalus of Pergamon later resettled its inhabitants near the sources of the Caicus river.
