Gryneium was an ancient Greek city in Aeolis on the Aegean coast of western Anatolia, near modern Aliaga in Turkey's Izmir province, known for a sanctuary of Apollo with an ancient oracle and a temple of white marble. Counted among the twelve cities of Aeolis, it later came under the control of neighboring Myrina and was a member of the Delian League. In 334 BC the Macedonian commander Parmenion took the city by assault on behalf of Alexander the Great, burned it, and sold its inhabitants into slavery; French excavations in 1883 and later Turkish work uncovered pottery, bronze items, a mosaic, and a necropolis with sarcophagi.
