Madytus

Madytus was an ancient Greek city and port on the Thracian Chersonese nearly opposite Abydos, founded by Aeolian settlers from Lesbos during the colonization movement of the eighth and seventh centuries BC and later joined by colonists from Miletus and Clazomenae. Herodotus mentions it in connection with the Persian Wars, and Xenophon records its use as an Athenian naval base in 411 BC; it was a member of the Delian League and remained economically active through the Byzantine and medieval periods. Its site lies near modern Eceabat in European Turkey, and after the 1920s population exchange between Greece and Turkey its Greek residents founded the town of Nea Madytos in Greece.
