Magnesia on the Maeander

Magnesia, or Magnesia on the Maeander, was an ancient Greek city in Ionia of considerable size, positioned at a commercially and strategically important location in the triangle formed by Priene, Ephesus and Tralles. The city was named after the Magnetes of Thessaly, who settled the area together with some Cretans, and was later called on the Maeander to distinguish it from the nearby Lydian city of Magnesia ad Sipylum. It was earlier the site of Leucophrys, mentioned by several ancient writers.
