Muğla

Muğla is a city in southwestern Turkey, center of both the Menteşe district and Muğla Province, on Turkey's Aegean coast though its own center sits inland at an elevation of 660 meters, about 30 kilometers from the Gulf of Gökova. Known in classical antiquity as Mobolla, it first appears in the historical record around the 2nd century BC and grew regionally important when it replaced Milas as the seat of the Ottoman sanjak in 1420. As of 2022 the city had 82,717 residents, and Muğla Province today administers major coastal tourist destinations including Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Dalyan. The city retains old neighborhoods of Turkish and Ottoman architecture, with distinctive chimneys and houses preserved from the 18th and 19th centuries.
