Naulochus (Ionia)

Naulochus, also recorded as Naulochos, Naulochum or Naulochon, was a town of ancient Ionia thought to have served as the port of Priene, though it may have been an autonomous city for at least part of the fourth century BC, since bronze coins bearing the legend of the Naulochians survive from that period. A decree of Alexander the Great from 334 BC granted the people of Priene freedom and certain privileges to reside in Naulochus, and around 330 BC a theorodokos of Naulochus was appointed to receive the envoy from Argos, a further sign of political autonomy, though it has also been suggested that the invitation was received at the port only to be passed on to Priene inland, to save the envoy time.
