Pergamon, also spelled Pergamum, was a rich and powerful ancient Greek city in Aeolis, about 26 kilometers from the Aegean Sea northwest of the modern Turkish city of Bergama. From 281 to 133 BC it was capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon under the Attalid dynasty, which turned it into one of the major cultural centers of the Greek world and built the monumental Pergamon Altar; it was the northernmost of the seven churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation, and the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
