Phocaea

Phocaea was an ancient Ionian Greek city on the western coast of Anatolia, in present-day Turkey near modern Foca. It was renowned in antiquity as a seafaring and colonizing power, founding distant settlements including Massalia, now Marseille, and Elea in southern Italy. The city's resistance to Persian conquest in the sixth century BC, including an emigration of much of its population rather than submit, is recorded by the historian Herodotus.
