Priene was an ancient Greek city of Ionia, built on steep, terraced slopes that once overlooked the Latmian Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Its ruins lie west of the modern village of Gullubahce, in the Soke district of Aydin Province, Turkey, near the Maeander River. Silting of the river gradually filled the gulf, leaving the once-coastal city stranded inland, and its remains include the Temple of Athena.
