Proconnesus (city)

Proconnesus, also spelled Prokonnesos, was a Greek town on the southwestern shore of Proconnesus island in the Sea of Marmara, in what is now Turkey. It was founded as a colony of the Milesians and was home to the poet Aristeas, author of the Arimaspeia. The town was burned by a Phoenician fleet acting under the Persian king Darius I, and the geographer Strabo later distinguished between an old and a new Proconnesus. At some point the inhabitants of nearby Cyzicus forced the Proconnesians to resettle among them, transferring the statue of the goddess Dindymene to Cyzicus.
