Rhoiteion

Rhoiteion was an ancient Greek settlement in the Troad region of northern Anatolia, on the Baba Kale spur near modern Intepe in Turkey's Canakkale province, its territory bounded by the Simoeis river and the neighboring city of Ophryneion. The geographer Strabo credited its founding to settlers from Astypalaia after the fall of Troy, though surface surveys suggest Greek occupation from at least the late eighth century BC. Herodotus records Xerxes' Persian army passing the city in 480 BC, and in 424 BC it was briefly seized by Mytilenean exiles before being ransomed back to Athens; the site was later valued as the legendary burial place of the Greek hero Ajax and was absorbed into the Hellenistic kingdom of Pergamon after 188 BC.
