Rize

Rize is a coastal city in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey and the administrative seat of both Rize Province and Rize District. Its population was 119,828 as of 2021. The article describes it as a typical Turkish provincial capital with little in the way of nightlife or entertainment, though its economy improved after the Georgian border opened in the early 1990s and the coastal road was widened. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has family roots in Rize, and a local university is named after him. The city is connected by road to Trabzon, 66 kilometers to the west, and to Hopa, 88 kilometers east near the border with Georgia, as well as south to Erzurum, and the Rize-Artvin Airport began operating in 2022.
