Sinop

Sinop is a coastal city on the Boztepe Peninsula at the northernmost point of Turkey's Black Sea coast, seat of Sinop Province and Sinop District, in the ancient region of Paphlagonia near Cape Sinope. Its population was 57,404 in 2022. The city began as a Greek colony founded by Ionian settlers from Miletus, was settled at various times by Colchians and Greeks between the 7th and 3rd centuries BC, and became capital of the Pontic Kingdom after 183 BC; it was the birthplace of the philosopher Diogenes. The Battle of Sinop took place there in 1853 during the Crimean War, a United States military radar base operated in the city during the Cold War until its closure in 1992, and a proposed 15.8 billion dollar nuclear power plant project was cancelled in 2018.
