Troy

Troy, also called Ilion, is an ancient city in present day Canakkale Province in northwestern Turkey, in the region known as the Troad. It is best known as the setting of the Greek myth of the Trojan War and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over roughly 4,000 years of settlement, leaving nine distinct archaeological layers; its location was unknown until Frank Calvert and Heinrich Schliemann excavated the site from 1871, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
