Mary is a city on an oasis in the Karakum Desert along the Murgab River in Turkmenistan, and the capital of Mary Region; it was founded in 1884 as a Russian military and administrative post near the ancient ruins of Merv, originally taking that site's name before being renamed Mary in 1937. Turkmenistan's fourth-largest city, Mary is a major industrial hub for natural gas and cotton production, and large natural gas reserves were discovered nearby in 1968. Its population was 167,027 at the 2022 census, up from 92,000 in 1989.
