Bac Ninh

Bac Ninh was a provincial city and the capital of Bac Ninh Province in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam, serving as the provinces cultural, administrative and commercial center. It reached official city status in January 2006, and by 2023 its population had grown to 287,658 across 82.60 square kilometers. During the French colonial period the city was known for its lacquer and mother-of-pearl craftwork, and in March 1884 it was the site of a decisive battle between French forces and Black Flag Army troops, after which the town fell to France. Bac Ninh ceased to exist as a provincial city on 1 July 2025, following the elimination of district-level units in Vietnam.
