Ha Long

Ha Long was a first-class provincial city and the capital of Quang Ninh Province in northeastern Vietnam, about 178 kilometers east of Hanoi. It was formed in 1993 by merging the old provincial capital, Hon Gai, with the tourist area of Bai Chay, and mainly lies along the shore of Ha Long Bay, bounded by the Gulf of Tonkin. According to the 2019 census its population was 270,054 across 1,119.12 square kilometers. Its economy shifted from coal mining toward tourism starting in 2012, driven by the large numbers of visitors drawn to Ha Long Bay each year. Ha Long ceased to exist as a provincial city on 1 July 2025, following the elimination of district-level units in Vietnam.
