My Tho

My Tho was a provincial city in Tien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, serving as the provinces capital until 1 July 2025, when Vietnams elimination of district-level administrative units ended its status as a separate municipal city. As of 2019 its population was about 270,700 across 81.55 square kilometers. The city was founded in the 1680s by Chinese refugees fleeing the fall of the Southern Ming dynasty and grew into a major commercial hub; Frances capture of the city in 1862 marked the establishment of the French colony of Cochinchina. My Tho serves as a regional center of economics, education and technology for the Mekong Delta and is known for river tourism and its distinctive noodle soup, hu tieu My Tho.
