Nam Dinh

Nam Dinh was the capital city of Nam Dinh Province in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam, about 90 kilometers southeast of Hanoi. According to 2022 data its population was 448,225 across 195.39 square kilometers, with an urban population of 364,181 as of January 2023. The citys modern name dates to 1831 under the Nguyen dynasty, though it had earlier served as a second capital under the Tran dynasty, when it was called Thien Truong, first recorded in 1262; it later earned the nickname Textilepolis for the French textile industry developed there from the 1880s. As part of Vietnams 2025 administrative reform, district-level subdivisions including Nam Dinh city were abolished, and its former territory now corresponds to wards and communes within Ninh Binh Province.
