Thanh Hoa

Thanh Hoa is the capital of Thanh Hoa Province on Vietnams North Central Coast, about 150 kilometers south of Hanoi. As of 2024 data its population was 850,000 across 228.22 square kilometers; the citys population had already risen sharply after a 2012 boundary expansion, from 207,698 to 406,550 by 2014. Thanh Hoa township was upgraded to city status in 1994 and has long served as the provinces political, economic and cultural center; it contains the ruins of the Ho Dynasty Citadel, which served as Vietnams capital from 1398 to 1407. United States bombing during the Vietnam War destroyed much of the citys buildings and infrastructure, and it has been rebuilt since.
