Urban Heat Island Effect

The tendency of a city to remain significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas, chiefly because pavement and buildings absorb and retain solar heat more effectively than vegetation and soil, and because human activity, reduced vegetation and altered wind patterns further concentrate heat. The effect can raise nighttime urban temperatures by several degrees and intensifies heat-related health risks during heat waves.
