Podzolization

A soil-forming process typical of cool, humid climates under coniferous forest, in which organic acids leach iron, aluminum and organic matter from the upper soil layer and redeposit them lower down, leaving a pale, ash-grey, nutrient-poor layer near the surface. It produces the distinctive podzol soils widespread across the boreal forests of Scandinavia, Russia and Canada.
