The relatively uniform removal of a thin layer of soil across a slope by rainfall impact and shallow, unchannelled overland flow, the first stage of water erosion before flow concentrates into rills and gullies. Because it removes soil evenly rather than in visible channels, it often goes unnoticed until productivity or vegetation cover declines.
